Obesity is a global health problem with a higher risk of developing cancer and infections. Natural killer (NK) cells are immune cells that attack tumor or virus-infected cells without previous sensitization. Humans with obesity showed impaired NK cell functions. This study analyses the effects of fat mass reduction on immune cells and NK cell functions after a 3-month program of exercise training and nutrition with obese subjects. 32 women and men were divided in control and experimental group. The results showed a significant reduction of body weight fat mass BMI waist and hip circumferences. The number of monocytes decreased whereas the populations of T cells and IFN-γ+ CD56dim NK cells increased. Additionally cytotoxicity of human NK-92 cell line towards a human colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line declined after stimulation with increasing leptin dosages. The results of this study demonstrate a modulation of immune functions after fat mass reduction in subjects with obesity. |
