Technological benefits of technical feed processing methods are well known. The actual benefits and disadvantages considering aspects of animal nutrition cannot be derived from previous studies because different experimental designs and feed ingredients complicated a direct comparison of common technical feed treatments. Therefore, the effects of common various technically treated complete feeds on nutrient digestibility, animal performance andhealth were examined in two fattening pig trials. The results showed that the higher extent of feed processing improved nutrient digestibility in a diet dependent manner. However, the positive impact on animal performance of the compacting processes was mainly based on the reduction of feed wastage. Because of the physical-chemical modification of feed by technical feed processing methods characteristics of the chyme were changed which influenced in turn the risk of stomach lesions and affected the intestinal immune system. Taking all aspects into account it follows a conflict of interests between the exploitation of performance potential and animal health which has to be balanced.
