Obesity is one of the most prognostically relevant symptoms of late-onset hypogonadism. MicroRNAs (miRs) are involved in the regulation of adipogenesis. Luciferase assays were performed to identify possible miR-130/301 target genes. In addition, the expression of miR and its target genes was measured after induction of adipogenesis and with the addition of androgens. AR, AdipoQ and TNF-α were identified as target genes of miR-130a. The miR expression in preadipocytes increased with the addition of T or DHT. Furthermore, a change in expression of AR and PPAR-γ was observed with the addition of androgens. A reduced serum androgen level is associated with a decreasing miR-130/301 expression, which changes the gene expression of the preadipocytes and can regulate adipogenesis.
