Churches and religious communities including Diakonie and Caritas did not only run educational institutions in the GDR, but also numerous further education and training institutions. These have been researched and reviewed as part of the project "Parallelwelt – Konfessionelles Bildungswesen in der DDR". From 1945 to 1989, there were 67 institutions and more open forms of confessional adult education and training (73 institutions when including the CDU party education system). Immediately after the end of the war in 1945, these were 13, in the founding year of the GDR in 1949 20, and at the end of the GDR there were 57 institutions (plus a training center of the CDU). Thus, the size of the denominational adult education and training sector had almost tripled in the four GDR decades – despite all obstruction or nonsupport from government agencies, which was also subject to the continuing education and training of the churches.
