The Saxon State Ministry of Science and Art (SMWK) is actively supporting all Saxon state universities in their aims to foster equality of male and female members and to strengthen their position among other universities in federal comparison. To learn more about the current determining factors of gender equality at the Saxon state universities and about methods and programs to foster equality of men and women as well as current gaps related to those efforts, SMWK mandated the Institute for Research on Higher Education Halle‐Wittenberg (HoF) with a study regarding “Gleichstellung an Hochschulen in Sachsen” [Gender Equality at Saxon State Universities]. Therefore, HoF decided to use a descriptive‐analytical experimental design. In combination with quantitative analyses, such as evaluations of relevant documents and statistics, the focus of the analysis was to outline the specific viewpoints of members of university administrations on gender equality regarding their own institutions and statewide trends. Between April and May 2018, exploratory discussions with gender equality officers and guided interviews with members of university administrations were conducted. Afterwards, the statements were clustered and as a result the following subject areas were identified as essential for the study’s leading interests: legal conditions of gender equality at state universities, gender equality as a subject of higher education management by the Saxon state government through “Zielvereinbarungen” [agreements on objectives], gender equality facilitation at universities by the Saxon state government as well as the role and the work of the the state’s office for gender equality at universities. Finally, the general findings regarding those subject areas were illustrated and different courses of action proposed.
