This pape examines the factors influencing length of hospital stay for thyroid surgeries analyzing 21587 thyroid surgery cases in the PETS 2 Study. The average length of hospital stay was 4.16 days of which 0.86 days on average were preoperative and 3.34 days post-operative. Factors influencing length of hospital stay were: patient age praeoperative diagnosis preoperative risk factors indications for surgery hospital and surgeon volume surgeon experience surgical access extent of surgery operative time intraoperative and postoperative complications need for blood transfusion use of antibiotics recurrent laryngeal nerve injury and paralysis histology reintervention postoperative therapy postoperative supplementation hypocalcaemia and discharge status. A comparison between the data in the PETS 1 and PETS 2 Studies shows that the average length of pre- post-operation hospitalization as well as total hospitalization time for thyroid surgeries overall has decreased significantly over the last decade. |
