Between 1. January and 31. December 1998, surgery for malignant goitre were preformed in 77 patients ( 63 FTC-Follicular thyroid cancer, 14 FTCox - Oxyphil cell tumour). 45 German hospitals participated. Data were collected prospectively by a questionnaire. On average, patients with FTCox (62,8 Years) were signifikant older than those with FTC (49,3 Years). There is no difference in the prevalence of follicular thyroid cancer and FTCox between patients with either solitary or multiple thyroid nodules. 27,5% (FTC) and 37,5% (FTCox) was the rate for initially misdiagnosed thyroid cancer. Intraoperativ sections diagnose follicular thyroid cancer in 50% of cases. The transient recurrent paralysis rate was in cases of completion thyreoidectomy (14%) significant higher than by initial operation (3,75%). |
