The paper in hand deals with the examination of the efficiency of a new combined therapy of UVB (311 nm) and Calcipotriol for the treatment of Vitiligo on the one hand. On the other, this investigation is to show the psychosocial aspects of the very disease. Therefore, 25 patients (19 female/ 6 male) were treated with UVB (311nm) twice a week over a period of 4-8 months. Additionally, Calcipotriol creme was applied to a selected lesion of the trunk twice a day. After finishing therapy, 22.2 % of the patients that suffer from facial Vitiligo, 19.1 % of those who suffer from lesions of their trunk and 4 % of those suffering from acral lesions, showed a very good repigmentation of over 75 % of the affected skin. The intensity of the reaction to UVB therapy differs depending on the different body areas (face > trunk > periphery). Compared to the areas of reference, a positive effect of Calcipotriol on the repigmentation of the chosen areas was not proven with certainty. One year after having finished therapy, the achieved repigmentation remained stable in over 80 % of the patients' cases. Taking into account the various individual differences, UVB (311 nm) must be considered as an efficient therapy for the treatment of Vitiligo. To draw a final conclusion of the assumed effect of Calcipotriol, additional and thorough studies will be necessary. To examine Vitiligo's psychosocial aspects, 315 patients were asked to fill in a questionnaire concerning their quality of life. The majority of the people who were asked stated that Vitiligo was severely harming their quality of life. Women suffer distinctly more than men regarding their everyday life as well as their mental condition, which resulted in higher scores of mental effort among female patients. Long-term suffering from Vitiligo led to an increase of the felt mental pressure. In contrast to the control group, the psychic state of Vitiligo patients was significantly worse. In comparison with other chronic skin diseases, the mental pressure that the patients have to cope with was relatively high. The concrete suffering of the Vitiligo patients should be taken care of by the doctor dealing with it at an early stage. Additional psychotherapeutical counselling of the patients may become necessary.
