This paper aims to contribute to the improvement and maintenance of the teaching quality of senior class courses of grammar schools by means of development, trial and reflection of a teaching concept for the geography course "Operation field earth" the characteristic of which is a self-steering and problem-solving learning process. The need of acting in this matter results from some investigations on the present teaching quality of such courses. Under consideration of actual discussions about education standards and core curricula, a concept with regard to the contents is elaborated for the course "Operation field earth", on the basis of a gradation model for the development of operation field relating acting competence, and it is checked by application of didactic-methodical arrangements for self-steering and problem-solving learning. As the findings of this check a level description is created for the competence development of pupils during the self-steering and problem-solving learning process. Thus, as a conclusion, it is necessary to transfer the teaching concept Self-steering and problem-solving learning to geography courses of different subjects and courses of different specialties too. A proposal is set for this transfer as well as for the establishment of the teaching concept within the culture of teaching and learning at school on occasion of elaboration of school curricula.
