The aim of the study was to analyse the level of utilisation of information and communication technologies (ICT) in dairy companies, to examine the need for information services and to develop ICT services by way of examples. In achieving this aim, the functions in the ICT sphere were clarified, as well as the question of how a sustained development of the companies and their ICT could be ensured by transferring these functions to a service provider. The examination of both ICT services and ICT outsourcing, which was based on literature researches, was conducted outside the agricultural sector. Moreover, related facts and circumstances, such as the business model definition, development schemes and procedure models were analysed in that examination. Similarities and differences between the agricultural sector and other economic sectors were represented. One of the factors giving rise to the differences was the size of the companies. The need for a systematic development of services was recognised and the significance of procedure models in particular was identified and developed. Existing procedure models, such as those of the "INA Project" and the "DIN technical report 75" were examined for their applicability. The need was established of developing an individual procedure model, characterised by an effective method of selection, manageability and transparency, tailored to meet individual requirements. In order to determine the situation of the dairy companies in Saxony-Anhalt in the ICT sphere, an analysis was conducted based on surveys carried out at an interval of two years (2003 and 2005). This situation analysis provided conclusions on the personnel and technical situation, as well as on the importance and need for support in implementing ICT functions in these companies. The results were evaluated with the help of mathematical-statistical methods. The analysis enabled the anticipated need for support and priorities to be established. An individual procedure model was developed based on the findings on the systematic development of services. In using this model and the priorities determined in the situation analysis, ICT services were developed by way of examples. Additional ideas for services ("comparison between companies for health data - dairy cattle" and "performance prediction service dairy - dairy cattle") arose from the discussions in the framework of "precision dairy farming".
