The object of this work was to investigate the manufacturing and application of amphiphilic dendritic core-shell-structures based on hyperbranched PEI loaded with metal ions and metal nanoparticles (silver copper zinc) respectively. Experiments concerning the technical application of the metal-hybrids included the impregnation of silicone catheters the coating of foils with thermoplastic and thermoset formulations and the preparation of compounds for film extrusion and injection moulding. The experimental data reveal a distinct correlation between the biological surface activity and the metal ion release as well as the water uptake behavior. Moreover it could be shown that the biocompatibility increases in the order of Cu-hybrid < Ag-hybrid < Zn-hybrid. Altogether the insights gained suggest that the developed metal-hybrids are suitable as advanced additive agents for the production of antimicrobial polymer materials in a wide range of applications including medical devices. |
