Iron is an essential element for almost all organisms. Although iron is one of the most abundant elements on Earth its bioavailability is extremely low with a solubility product at neutral pH of 10-18 M. An efficient iron uptake strategy is therefore a virulence determinant for pathogenic fungi like the maize pathogen Colletotrichum graminicola. C. graminicola has a hemibiotrophic life style and uses two high affinity iron uptake strategies the reductive iron assimilation (RIA) and siderophore-mediated iron acquisition (SIA). Targeted gene deletions infection assays and live-cell imaging showed that C. graminicola employs the RIA pathway specifically during biotrophic development as siderophore production during the biotrophic phase prime plant defense responses and imposes a disadvantage to C. graminicola. The SIA pathway is important for vegetative growth under iron limited condition necrotrophic development and is essential for conidiation.
