This work demonstrates that d-band quantum well states (QWS) in ferromagnetic films lead to magnetic anisotropy oscillations as a function of film thickness. The systematic magneto-optical effect (MOKE) studies on several film/substrate combinations allow to conclude that the magnetic anisotropy oscillations are a direct consequence of the quantization of dxz dyz out-of-plane orbitals. In addition X-ray Magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) measurements reveal a direct correlation between QWS the orbital moment and the magnetic anisotropy. It is also shown that the measured oscillation amplitude of magnetic anisotropy strongly depends on temperature. By using spin-polarized low energy electron microscopy (SPLEEM) it is demonstrated how changes of the easy magnetization axis proceed in our systems. |
