The project "Transformative Learning through Engagement - Social Innovations as a Driver for Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development" aimed to inspire young people to get involved in sustainability. Together with four schools it developed so-called learning workshops in the mode of service learning combining technical learning with extracurricular social engagement in places of social innovation (repair cafes urban gardens and food-saving initiatives). In a participatory process the students and teachers wereinvolved in designing the learning workshops together with extracurricular partners (social innovation actors and non-formal education providers). The accompanying scientific researchand the responsive evaluation of the learning workshops show that young people’s engagement in places of social innovation has a special potential for the learning of young people and the facilitators. Embedding this engagement in a format of service learning based on curriculum opened up spaces of practical activities as well as personal and professional reflection. The quality of the learning experience for the young people was also linked to successful cooperation among the various learning facilitators. The facilitators used the cooperation for different processes of professionalization in the context of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) which in turn can be theorized as transformative learning. The project results were used to develop a manual for educational practitioners in and out of school as well as a discussion paper entitled "Transformative Learning in the Context of Socio-Ecological Transformation Processes - Impulses Findings and Recommendations for Education for Sustainable Development from the ReFoPlan Project TrafoBNE". |
