The study considers the energy transformation of buildings and districts with the goal of greenhouse gas neutrality by 2050. For this purpose we develop and evaluate different transformation pathways for four districts. The transformation pathways differ in terms of the renovation rate and renovation depth of the buildings the use of renewable energy sources the use of different insulation and building materials and in terms of whether heat is generated at the level of individual buildings or at a district level via a district heating network. In addition to the main indicator of greenhouse gas emissions we consider the final energy consumption in the utilisation phase of the buildings/districts. Furthermore the production phase is taken into account by looking at the energy expenditure as well as other environmental impacts during the production of the materials and technologies used. In addition we estimate and compare the investments and running costs. Depending on the measures taken the districts achieve greenhouse gas neutrality at slightly different costs and with different impacts on the overarching energy system. Based on the transformation scenarios as well as their results we discuss in detail challenges in the definition of the term “district” and its boundary conditions and develop solution approaches. Additionally we investigate the benefits of energy management systems in districts. The aim is to identify potentials and synergies within the district (in contrast to the individual building approach) in order to make the energy supply as resource- emissions- and cost-efficient as possible. |
