Carbon dioxide capture and utilization (CCU) is a key technology for industrial transformation towards climate neutrality. CCU allows the production of carbon-based materials without the use of fossil feedstock. The current state of research and development of CCU processes is described and their respective environmental impact if known listed. The characteristics and availability of possible CO2 sources are discussed and theoretical potentials for future use of CCU are analyzed. A more detailed cradle-to-gate analysis is carried out for a set of processcombinations. They are analyzed with respect to several environmental impact categories and compared to the performance of the fossil reference process. Relevant site-specific aspects or the implementation of industrial CCU processes are presented and evolving path dependencies discussed. The regulatory framework for CCU applications is described and current research and development activities as well as active projects listed. |
